The NFL football schedule typically kicks off with the preseason games in August of each year and culminates with the Super Bowl in early February. The Super Bowl was first played on January 15th, 1967 and is designated by a roman numeral. The most recent Super Bowl XLV was played on February 6th, 2011. The championship game was created as part of the merger between the NFL and AFL.

The 2011 NFL football season is scheduled to kick-off with games in early September 2011. Super Bowl XLVI will be held on February 5th, 2012 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. The current NFL schedule sees teams play 4 pre-season games that occur in August followed by 16 regular season games. 2011 NFL Football Schedule Methodology

Under the legacy 16 game regular season format, each NFL team plays their three divisional rivals twice in a home/road arrangement. Each team then plays four teams from a division in the opposite conference and one game against each of the teams in a division in the same conference. The final two games are then scheduled against teams in the same conference finishing in the same relative position in the division from the previous season (ie if your team came in second, they would play two of the 2nd place finishers in other divisions in the same conference).
